Irony

In this blog post we’ll try to understand irony, some examples, and practical steps you can take to get out of an ironic situation.

Irony (from the Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία eirōneía, meaning dissimulation) is a situation in which there is incongruity between the literal or expected meanings and the implied/actual meanings of things.

I feel like irony is one important theme to read in reality.

It’s like rai-ee-aaaain

Examples:

  • The Titanic was advertised as an “unsinkable” ship… so it’s ironic that it sank on it’s maiden voyage.
  • The Cult Awareness Network (CAN), once a leading anti-cult hotline, is now owned by the Church of Scientology.
  • The founder of AA asked for whiskey on his deathbed. (The nurse refused.)
  • Before 2012, the largest purchaser of kale in America was Pizza Hut—they used it as garnish around their salad bars.
  • Fahrenheit 451, a book about a dystopian society where the government burns books, is banned from many school districts.

Here’s a 4 step method to get out of an ironic situation:

  1. Acknowledge Feelings: Recognize and validate your frustration.
  2. Embrace Humor: Laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
  3. Learn and Adapt: Use the experience as a lesson for future actions.
  4. Focus on Control: Concentrate on aspects you can influence and set achievable goals.

For example, if an outdoor event is ruined by rain, acknowledge your disappointment, laugh about it, adapt by moving indoors, and focus on making the indoor event successful.

Conclusion

I hoped you learned about irony in this blog post, and see how funny it is.
